The Mk1 was first introduced in September 1962 as a front engine/rear wheel drive car with a very simple style, and a basic level of interior trim and equipment.


The Mk1 was powered by a 1.2 litre engine producing 49 bhp, and an all synchromesh gearbox with either column or floor change, and drum brakes all round.  The price of the car new was £639.00.


The car was available in either 2 door, or 4 door versions, with a choice of ‘standard’ or ‘de-luxe’ trim packs.  next came the ‘super model’ with a 1.5 litre engine producing 60 bhp, followed by the ‘gt’ version producing 78 bhp.


In 1963 the ‘Lotus’ Cortina was introduced using lotus’s own 105 bhp twin cam engine.


In 1966 twelve models were available with a price range of £648 - £1010 new.


The summer of 1966 saw the last of the 1,013,391 Mk1’s that had been assembled, and the Mk11 was about to appear.
